QUERNSTONE
History and Etymology for quern. Middle English, from Old English cweorn; akin to Old High German quirn hand mill, Old Church Slavonic žrŭny.
Quern definition is - a primitive hand mill for grinding grain.
Uses of quern-stones. An old Gaelic proverb is "The quern performs best when the grindstone has been pitted.". The upper stones were usually concave whilst the lower was convex. Quern-stones are frequently identifiable by their grooved working surfaces which enabled the movement of flour.
It is not easy to produce flour from a saddle quern with unmalted grain. The muller is also referred to as a 'rubber' or 'mouler'. As the name implies, the rotary quern used circular motions to grind the material, meaning both the quern and the handstone were generally circular.
