QUAERED [ˈkwôrdər]
VERB
to cut the body of (a person) into quarters, especially in executing for treason or the like. Machinery. to make holes in, fix, etc., a quarter of a circle apart. to furnish with lodging in a particular place. to impose (soldiers) on persons, towns, etc., to be lodged and fed: He quartered his men with the farmer.
QUARTERING OF SOLDIERS. The constitution of the United States, Amend. art. 3, provides that "no soldier shall in time of peace be quartered, in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war but in a manner to be prescribed by law." By quartering is understood boarding and lodging or either.
"Drawn and quartered" is a reference to an old medieval fashion of execution. During this method of execution, the condemned would first be tied or lashed to a wooden frame or hurdle and would be "drawn" by horse to the place of execution.
'drawing and quartering' or 'drawn and quartered' is an American English idiom meaning to be 'severly punished'. The expression alludes to, and is derived from the old English punishment for treason, but is not actually the punishment itself.
