Quadrupedalism is a form of terrestrial locomotion where a tetrapod animal uses all four limbs ( legs) to weightbear, walk and run. An animal or machine that usually maintains a four-legged posture and moves using all four limbs are said to be a quadruped (from Latin quattuor for "four", and pes for "foot").
An animal or machine that usually moves in a quadrupedal manner is known as a quadruped, meaning "four feet". The majority of quadrupeds are vertebrate animals, including mammals such as cattle, dogs and cats, and reptiles, like lizards. Birds, humans, insects, crustaceans, and snakes are not quadrupeds. However, there are some exceptions.
