NEGLIGEES [ˌneɡləˈZHā]
The negligee or négligée, from the French: négligé, literally meaning "neglected", is a form of women's clothing consisting of a sheer usually long dressing gown. It is a form of nightgown intended for wear at night and in the bedroom.
negligee (n.) 1756, "a kind of loose gown worn by women," from French négligée, noun use of fem. past participle of négligier "to neglect" (14c.), from Latin neglegere "to disregard, not heed, not trouble oneself about," also "to make light of" (see neglect (v.)).
The noun negligee can be countable or uncountable. In more general, commonly used, contexts, the plural form will also be negligee.
