LINEFEED [ˈlīn ˌfēd]
NOUN
Often abbreviated LF, a line feed is a code that moves the cursor on a display screen down one line. In the ASCII character set, a line feed has a decimal value of 10.
This is commonly escaped as , abbreviated CR, and has ASCII value 13 or 0x0D. Linefeed means to advance downward to the next line; however, it has been repurposed and renamed. Used as "newline", it terminates lines (commonly confused with separating lines). This is commonly escaped as , abbreviated LF or NL, and has ASCII value 10 or 0x0A.
This is what we now call . Line feed LF signals the end of the line, it signals that the line has ended - but doesn't move the cursor to the next line. In other words, it doesn't "return" the cursor/printer head to the next line.
What is LF (Line Feed)? Short for line feed, LF is an ASCII character or button on the printer that instructs the printer to move down one line. A line feed is not the same as a carriage return or newline character. However, the text CR may be combined with LF to form CR/LF or CRLF. Should I use "line feed" or "linefeed" in my writing?
