LIEDER [ˈlēd]
noun, plural lied·er [lee-der; German lee-duh r] /ˈli dər; German ˈli dər/. a typically 19th-century German art song characterized by the setting of a poetic text in either strophic or through-composed style and the treatment of the piano and voice in equal artistic partnership: Schubert lieder.
Songs composed by classical composers are sometimes called “art songs”. Lieder are normally songs for a singer with piano accompaniment. They were mostly composed in the 19th century which was the period known as the Romantic period.
The English word “lied” in German means “gelogen” but when combined with “to” that is “lied to” it means “angelogen” in German. While on other side “Lied”(pronounced as “leet”) in German means “Song” in English and in its plural form used as “Lieder” in German.
