NOUN
lesbianism (noun)
In biology, the singular symbol represents the female sex. A lesbian is a homosexual woman. The word lesbian is also used for women in relation to their sexual identity or sexual behavior, regardless of sexual orientation, or as an adjective to characterize or associate nouns with female homosexuality or same-sex attraction.
Recent Examples on the Web In 1936, for example, the ACLU challenged the City of Boston’s decision to ban Lillian Hellman’s play The Children’s Hour for daring to include a theme of lesbianism.
Its connotation of “female homosexuality ” was added in the late 19th century, when an association was made with the tender and often passionate poetry written by Lesbian poet Sappho ( c. 610– c. 580 bce) to and about other women in her female coterie.
1595–1605; < Latin Lesbi(us) Lesbian (< Greek Lésbios, equivalent to Lésb(os) Lesbos + -ios adj. suffix) + -an; (defs 2, 5) alluding to the poet Sappho of Lesbos, whose verse deals largely with her emotional relationships with other women.
