LEOPARDS [ˈlepərd]
Leopard Characteristics Although they are the smallest of the big cat species, leopards are still a powerful force to be reckoned with . In particular, their skulls are notably large and their jaws are so powerful that they can take prey much larger than themselves.
The ocelot is smaller, has a smaller head and the spot pattern is different (smaller and more frequent "spots"). The leopard has a broader head and a thicker tail.
Types of Leopards. Subspecies, and black panthers. There are quite a few varieties of this beautiful big cat, with African, Indian, Javan, Arabian, Amur, North Chinese, Caucasian, Indochinese, and Sri Lankan leopards each making up a different subspecies, and possibly more, shown by bone fragments.
Etymology: The word Leopard comes from two Greek words that translate as “lion” and “male panther;” this comes from a time when people felt that Leopard was the child of both Panther and Lion.
