LEOPARD CAT [ˈlepərd kat]
NOUN
leopard cat (noun) · leopard cats (plural noun)
Definition of leopard cat. : a small spotted wildcat (Prionailurus bengalensis synonym Felis bengalensis) chiefly of southeastern Asia.
Beginning with 1960s, Leopard cats have been mated with domestic cats, yielding a hybrid species called "Bengal cat", which can be kept as a pet without a license. Throughout its range, Leopard cat is the most commonly found small cat. Being excellent swimmers, Leopard cats have colonized offshore islands throughout the area of their distribution.
Historically, the leopard cat of continental Asia was considered the same species as the Sunda leopard cat. As of 2017, the latter is recognised as a distinct species, with the taxonomic name Prionailurus javanensis. Leopard cat subspecies differ widely in fur colour, tail length, skull shape and size of carnassials.
In 1987, Chinese zoologists pointed out the affinity of leopard cats from northern China, Amur cats and leopard cats from southern latitudes. In view of the morphological similarities they did not support classifying the Amur cat as a species.
