JURY [ˈjo͝orē]
The word jury has a few different meanings. It can be a group of people that decides the verdict in a legal case or a group of people who judge a contest. Via French, this jury goes back to a Latin verb meaning "to swear (an oath)," also seen in words like perjury. But, in the nautical world, jury means "makeshift" or "temporary."
• Jury is a body of people sworn in while judge is a single person. • Jury is comprised of jurors who are people drawn from various walks of life and sworn in to arrive at impartial decisions or verdicts. Judge is a person competent in law, and appointed to decide cases in a court of law and pass judgments.
The jury is made up of 12 people who are selected on what is supposed to be a random basis. Then, they are supposed to render a verdict in partiality based on the facts and the law alarm. At the same time, there are numerous problems with jury selection, including some people not showing up for jury duty.
The size of the jury varies; in criminal cases involving serious felonies there are usually 12 jurors . In civil cases many trials require fewer than twelve jurors.
