Gemology. Gemology or gemmology is the science dealing with natural and artificial gemstone materials. It is considered a geoscience and a branch of mineralogy. Some jewelers are academically trained gemologists and are qualified to identify and evaluate gems.
Work opportunities exist mainly in the jewellery industry; however, it is difficult to find employment as a gemmologist. Most job opportunitites are found in the retail end of the industry. Other careers such as police, customs officer, insurance agents sometimes need gemmological training.
A gemmologist uses testing equipment such as refractometer, spectroscope, microscope, etc. to identify the nature of gemstones.
