Famciclovir is a guanosine analogue antiviral drug used for the treatment of various herpesvirus infections, most commonly for herpes zoster (shingles). It is a prodrug form of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability. Famciclovir is marketed under the trade name Famvir (Novartis).
It stops the spread of herpes virus in the body by preventing the replication of viral DNA that is necessary for viruses to multiply. Other drugs in the same class include acyclovir ( Zovirax) and valacyclovir ( Valtrex ). Famciclovir is actually a "prodrug," that is, not active directly against viruses.
It is a prodrug form of penciclovir with improved oral bioavailability. Famciclovir is marketed under the trade name Famvir ( Novartis ). Famciclovir was patented in 1983 and approved for medical use in 1994. In 2007, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic version of famciclovir.
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and change in the amount of urine (kidney problems). Famciclovir does not protect against the spread of genital herpes.
