ERODED [əˈrōd]
VERB
Definition of erode. transitive verb. 1 : to diminish or destroy by degrees: a : to eat into or away by slow destruction of substance (as by acid, infection, or cancer) b : to wear away by the action of water, wind, or glacial ice flooding eroded the hillside.
The four forces of erosion are water, wind, glaciers, and gravity. Water is responsible for most erosion. Water can move most sizes of sediments, depending on the strength of the force. Wind moves sand-sized and smaller pieces of rock through the air.
There are three primary kinds of erosion: wind, water, and tillage. In areas where the land is especially flat or dry, wind erosion is a problem. As wind blows it spreads soil particles across the land. Tillage erosion is mostly caused by the way a farmer tills the land.
The factors which influence the rate of erosion are rainfall, runoff, wind, soil, slope, plant cover and the presence or absence of conservation measures. These and other related factors are grouped under three headings; energy, resistance and protection (Fig. 7.1)
