Boyle's law is a gas law which states that the pressure exerted by a gas (of a given mass, kept at a constant temperature) is inversely proportional to the volume occupied by it. In other words, the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional to each other as long as the temperature and the quantity of gas are kept constant.
Boyle's law states that at constant temperature the volume of a given mass of a dry gas is inversely proportional to its pressure . Most gases behave like ideal gases at moderate pressures and temperatures. The technology of the 17th century could not produce very high pressures or very low temperatures.
A modern statement of Boyle's law is The absolute pressure exerted by a given mass of an ideal gas is inversely proportional to the volume it occupies if the temperature and amount of gas remain unchanged within a closed system.
The Boyle temperature is formally defined as the temperature for which the second virial coefficient, B 2 ( T ) {displaystyle B_{2}(T)} becomes zero. It is at this temperature that the attractive forces and the repulsive forces acting on the gas particles balance out.
